best 17-inch laptop under 1000

There is no such thing as a laptop that is too big or too small. It's all a matter of personal preference. If you're aware of a 17" laptop's size and footprint and are OK with it, go for it! Personally, I'd choose that size screen since I believe gaming on a smaller screen would be difficult.
